Remedies for “immediatism”

We live in an era defined by speed, where everything, from information to personal gratification, seems to be just the push of a button away.

We rush, as if in a video game, chasing the “novelty” and “efficiency” rewards hidden along the way, while in the process devaluing the essence of things, the beauty of details, and the pauses we need to savor life in its fullness. Life unfolds on a screen with too low a resolution to leave room for details.

What I have described here is a culture of “immediatism,” an unconventional term for the pursuit of instant gratification as a way of life. In the whirlwind of the “instant,” patience and resilience become not only acts of courage but also symbols of a movement of resistance.

Linguistically, the Latin immediatus suggests something that happens directly, without anything in between. Poetically, “immediatism” is the echo of a world in which waiting has become almost an anachronism, a world characterized by a continual flight from the depth and complexity of human experiences.

“Immediatism,” therefore, finds its linguistic and poetic justification in its ability to open our eyes, inviting us to rediscover the value of patience and resilience in the face of the pressure to experience everything here and now, without delay. It is a term that, paradoxically, urges us to slow down, reflect, and choose the less-traveled path, one that is infinitely richer in meaning and authentic fulfillment.

Patience, in this broader context, is not merely a virtue. It is a dialogue with time itself. It is the art of mindful presence—the art of embracing life’s delays, obstacles, and uncertainties without losing sight of the horizon of our aspirations. In this acceptance and this dialogue lies the first sign of a wisdom that transcends the present, leading us toward inner peace.

But patience alone is not enough. It must be accompanied by the resilience that enables us to rise after every fall, heal our wounds, and keep moving forward, wiser and stronger than before. Resilience is the sculpting of hope from the stone of despair; it is a testament to a spirit that refuses to be defeated.

It is in this symbiosis between patience and resilience that fertile ground for personal growth and creativity emerges. It is precisely in those quiet moments, when we give our souls the necessary pauses, that the deepest revelations are born. Every moment of waiting becomes a promise of blossoming, giving us the space we need for self-reflection and for developing new perspectives on the world. During these periods of introspection, we recognize our true desires and direct our energy toward achieving them.

The supreme example of patience and resilience is found in the life of Jesus, who, despite rejection, ridicule, and suffering, remained faithful to His divine principles. His patience and resilience teach us that true greatness is measured by our ability to live according to high principles, to love unconditionally, and to make the world a better place, one step at a time, day after day. This is the path to a truly meaningful and memorable life—a life worth living.
